Birdwatching in the Forest of Dadia-Lefkimmi-Soufli, Regional Unit of Evros
Located just 2 km from the Ecotourism Center, within the protected area of the Dadia-Lefkimmi-Soufli Forest, a closed observatory offers visitors the opportunity to observe vultures and other birds of prey that come to feed at the feeding station. The feeding station is a designated site within the Dadia Forest where rangers leave animal carcasses to provide an additional food source for vultures and other raptors. Starting from the Ecotourism Center, several trails have been marked and properly signposted for visitors. Following these trails, one can reach the observatory, located on the summit of Mount Gimbrena, or ascend to Kapsalo for panoramic views of the surrounding area. The forest is situated in the central part of Evros Prefecture and forms part of the southeastern foothills of the Rhodope mountain range. It spans a lowland-semi-mountainous zone, with elevations ranging from 10 to 604 meters. To the west lies a mountainous zone with higher peaks, such as Sapka (1,044 m) and Silo (1,065 m). The area has been a protected site since 1980 and includes two strict protection zones covering a total area of 72,900 str., along with a peripheral zone of 357,100 str. The Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli Forest is an exceptionally important habitat, hosting countless species of flora and, most notably, rare birds of prey. Out of the 38 raptor species found in Europe, 21 have been recorded in Dadia. Visitors can also enjoy an easy and scenic 5-km route starting at the Dadia Ecotourism Center. This trail forms a large loop at the boundaries of the protected area before returning near the village limits.
