Saos is the highest mountain on the island of Samothrace, with an altitude of 1,611 meters. It dominates the island, covering most of its landscape, and its remarkable height sustains numerous springs that continue to flow even during the summer months. Streams and waterfalls cascade down its slopes, forming small, picturesque pools known as 'vathres'. According to mythology, Poseidon observed the Trojan War from the summit of Saos. The mountain takes its name from Saon, the island’s first settler, who was said to be the son of Zeus and a nymph, or of the god Hermes and Rhene. The summit of Saos is accessible to visitors, and ascending it is a popular challenge for many tourists exploring the island
