Nestled at the north-eastern edge of the prefecture, this area lies at the base of the tallest peak in central Rhodope, which reaches a height of 1,953 meters. In 1980, the forest was recognized as a 'Monument in Nature to Preserve' because of its vital ecological importance, standing as one of Europe’s last remaining virgin forests. Being classified as virgin means that its growth has been completely shaped by natural processes, untouched by human interference. Since 1980, it has been under strict protection, allowing only scientific research to be conducted within its bounds. What sets this virgin forest apart from regular forests is its rich variety of both broad-leaved and coniferous trees at different stages of growth. You'll find primary species like fir, pine, and beech, along with maple, birch, and other types. Surrounding this precious forest is a protective zone where activities such as grazing and hunting are strictly forbidden. However, timber production and recreational activities are still permitted in this buffer area. The forest is teeming with wildlife, showcasing a remarkable variety in both species and population density. It’s regarded as one of Greece’s most crucial mountain ecosystems, hosting nearly all the wild species found in the mountainous regions of the country. More than 100 bird species breed here, many of which are protected at both national and international levels. The mammal population counts 32 species, including rare ones in Greece like bears and deer. Numerous local areas within this stunning region are recognized for their natural significance as 'Monuments of Nature to be Preserved.' This includes the central Rhodope virgin forest, which spans 550 hectares and falls under the management of the Forestry Department of Drama (Government Gazette 121/D/80), along with other highlights like the springs of the Aggitis River, the Frakto virgin forest, the Elatia forest, the Nestos lakes, the Dipotama waterfall, the Maara cave, the artificial lake of Lefkogeia, and the ski resort on Mount Falakro.
