The village of Ochyro and its surrounding mountains are famous for their World War II fortifications and the courageous stand taken by a small group of Greek soldiers against the Nazi invasion. On April 6 and 7, 1941, the Greek Army fiercely defended these forts against combined German and Bulgarian forces. Remarkably, the forts were never breached and only surrendered after Greece capitulated. Standing atop a 220-meter hill near Ochyro, Fort Lisse serves as a powerful reminder of this heroic resistance. Visitors can explore this impressive fortress, complete with its complex underground tunnels, machine gun placements, and the Lisse Park Museum. The museum offers a unique experience: Guests are guided through the site, where digital displays bring the Greek defence to life. A knowledgeable guide then takes visitors along a picturesque path to a hidden entrance of the fortress. Inside, the intricate galleries have been turned into an engaging theme park that honours history. Through digital technology, visitors can immerse themselves in soundscapes, thematic exhibits, and retrospectives that bring the battles to life. In the Fort Lisse VR room, guests can feel the intensity of the Battle of the Forts through a 360° virtual reality experience, gaining insights into the clever defence strategies and admiring the fortress’s sturdy design.
