Alexandroupoli, the capital of the Evros Regional Unit, is one of the most significant commercial ports in north-eastern Greece. The city's iconic landmark, the French-style Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli, stands proudly along the coastal road and serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the town.

The lighthouse features a cylindrical tower with a broad base made of grouted stone, topped with an impressive torch. Built in 1880 by the French Lighthouse and Lantern Company, Administration Générale des Phares de l'Empire Ottoman, it was erected to accommodate the increased maritime traffic resulting from the railway's completion in 1870. The railway, along with the establishment of the port, played a crucial role in Alexandroupoli’s growth and development.

Visitors can also discover the city's historical railway sites, including the old railway station, commonly referred to as the 'French Station,' which was one of the first buildings in the early layout of the town, originally known as Dedeagach. Other notable sites include the Unitarian Station, located in the Egnatia Park area and destroyed in 1915, the former passenger station at the present-day KAPI (Open Care Center for the Elderly), the Military Station on Rhodes Street (now repurposed as a kindergarten), and the customs warehouses at the port.
