The Multipurpose Space for Art and Thought, known as the Grand Maison Mansion, is a significant cultural landmark in the heart of Xanthi's Old Town and serves as a vital reference point for the city. This building, where the acclaimed Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis was born and raised, dates back to the late 18th century and is characterised by its neoclassical and baroque architectural elements. Originally owned by Isaac Daniel, a wealthy Jewish businessman of the time, the mansion passed to his children after his death. However, due to their inability to pay the inheritance tax, the building was taken over by the Treasury Department and subsequently repurposed as a Tax Office. Following the civil war, it was utilized by the army as the city garrison. The mansion is distinguished by its intricate architectural details, which include impressive frescoes and ceiling paintings, mosaic floors, and stained-glass windows. Fully restored, it has been transformed into a vibrant multipurpose space dedicated to art and thought. It now hosts exhibitions and events that celebrate and preserve the legacy of Manos Hadjidakis while also promoting the cultural history of Xanthi. Visitors can experience the enchanting ambiance and explore the life and work of one of Greece's greatest composers.
