The tobacco warehouses in Drama serve as a vivid reminder of the city’s thriving tobacco trade and industrial growth during the 19th and 20th centuries. They are emblematic of a significant chapter in the city’s economic history. The Agia Varvara springs, with their crystal-clear waters, create a stunning natural oasis right in the heart of Drama. Surrounded by lush greenery and charming wooden bridges, these springs are an iconic part of the city, inviting visitors to enjoy a peaceful retreat. Not far from the springs lies the church of Agia Varvara, a religious site steeped in local history and legend. Many believe that a 'sunken' church rests beneath the waters, adding a touch of mystique to the area. The remnants of the original church, destroyed by flooding in 1830, can still be glimpsed beneath the lake. According to local lore, the flood occurred when Turkish conquerors attempted to demolish the church to build a mosque. Legend has it that Saint Barbara intervened to protect her sacred ground, causing the flood to thwart the mosque’s construction. The new church was later built directly across from the lake, while the foundations of the original church remain submerged, preserving a connection to this rich and storied past.
