Clinging to the rocky southern coast of Samothrace, along the road leading to Pachia Ammos Beach, stands the small church of Panagia Krimniotissa. Though the road access is challenging, the visit is worthwhile for its enchanting views of the Aegean Sea and the nearby island of Imbros. According to legend, during the Iconoclastic period (730–843 AD), an icon of the Virgin Mary was washed ashore by the waves. Locals initially placed the icon nearby, but it disappeared, only to be rediscovered later on a hill further inland. When this phenomenon repeated, a chapel was built on the exact spot where the icon was found again.
