A visit to Kavala cannot be complete without tasting one of its famous traditional products, which are sold in many parts of the city. A typical local sweet, perfectly identified with the city of Kavala, is none other than the kourabiedes of Nea Karvali. Considered to be the best kourabiedes in Greece, these delicious sweets are distinguished not only by the excellent quality of the butter used in their preparation - a mixture of cow's and sheep's milk in the original recipe, and cow's milk and vegetable butter in the more modern version - but also by their shape, which sometimes resembles a crescent, and sometimes small balls. Another key feature is that they contain whole almonds from local trees and, in addition to the abundant sugar that gives them their white appearance, great care is taken to knead them properly to keep them fluffy and to bake them carefully so that they do not break. Originally from Cappadocia, the recipe was brought to Kavala by refugees from Asia Minor who settled in the area.
