Built in 2005, the Jewish Monument is located in the Grove of Agia Paraskevi, in the city centre. The monument was erected by the municipality in honour of the approximately 1350 Jews of Komotini who were victims of the Holocaust during the Second World War. On 4 March 1943, the Bulgarian occupation authorities unexpectedly rounded up the Jewish population of Komotini and transported them by train to the Bulgarian port of Lom. There, they were loaded onto three barges and transported to Vienna, and from there again by train to Treblinka, Poland, where they were exterminated by the Nazis. The Jews of Komotini were Hispanic (Sepharades) and lived inside and west of the Castle of Komotini.
