It is a panthracian pilgrimage with a long history. It is located at the 16th kilometre of the Komotini-Lagos-Xanthi national road. In the 12th century, the monastery location was called Panagia. According to tradition, the holy icon of the Virgin Mary was revealed (Faneromeni meaning "the revealed one" in Greek) approximately 300 years ago to an Ottoman landowner, who is said to have had a vision of a Cross on a tree for three consecutive days. Following the instructions of the Virgin Mary, he informed the Metropolitan and they dug up the roots of the tree, where they discovered the icon. The icon was claimed by several settlements and parishes. The icon, after a prayer by the Metropolitan, was placed in a carriage and was driven alone to the Metropolitan Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In 1955, Metropolitan Timotheos Mattheakis decided to return the icon to the place where it was found. A short distance away, where a suitable site was found, a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (nine days of the Virgin Mary) which is celebrated on August 23, along with a building suitable for accommodating monks, which was completed a few years later. The icon of the Virgin Mary was placed inside the church. Initially (1957) it functioned as a male monastery and later as a female monastery. As a women's monastery it still operates today with three nuns. Every year on the eve of the feast, the largest festival of the prefecture of Rhodope takes place in the precinct of the monastery, where thousands of pilgrims arrive. Noteworthy is the presence of many Muslim pilgrims, mainly women, who honour Mary, the mother of Jesus.
