Ancient Stryme (Molyvoti site)
Twenty-six kilometres south of Komotini, nestled between the lagoons of Ptelea and Elos, lies the Molyvotis Beach. A peaceful, unspoiled beach, Molyvoti has been cherished for centuries by the locals of Rhodope—particularly those from the nearby villages of Kosmio, Neo Sidirochori, Kalamokastro, and Pagouria. Despite its natural beauty, it remains untouched by tourism. Just before the beach is the archaeological site of Ancient Stryme, where excavations are in progress. A truly remarkable underground aqueduct, along with an advanced water supply and sewerage system for its time, has been discovered—highlighting the impressive technological sophistication of the era. The archaeological site is currently closed to visitors. Molyvotis Beach is an ideal destination for underwater diving and fishing enthusiasts. From the fish farm in the area you can buy heads, sea bass and sea bream. From August to October, the large flathead grey mullet, known locally as "niakia", becomes a delicious seasonal delicacy for visitors to enjoy.
