Birdwatching in Porto Lagos - Regional Unit of Xanthi

 

Porto Lagos is a charming village that sits both by the sea and alongside a lake, located in the southeast of the prefecture, on the border between Xanthi and Rhodope. For years, it has been renowned among ornithologists as an exceptional destination for birdwatching. The area, comprised of lagoons, meadows, forests, and Lake Vistonida, provides a rich habitat that is home to a diverse array of bird species. Among the 302 different species found in this biotope are the Lefkotsiknias, the Finikopetra, and the Lagoon, among others.

 

At the entrance to the village and its harbour, a small forest features pine trees where three species of herons nest: Cattle Egrets, White-crested Egrets, and Cryptic Egrets. Visitors can observe these beautiful birds using binoculars, either from the observation points available or from the waterfront.
