Tekke Kütüklü Baba, in Selino
The Lodge of Father Kütüklü (Kütüklü Baba Tekkesi) is an Ottoman funerary monument, believed to have been constructed in the 15th or early 16th century. Situated on the western shore of Lake Vistonida, northwest of Selino in the prefecture of Xanthi, it lies near the ruins of ancient Anastasiopolis - Peritheorio. Among Turkish-speaking locals, the monument is known as the Tekke Kütüklü Baba, while Greek-speaking residents simply refer to it as the Tekke. Although it is referred to as a tekke, which means dervish monastery, this designation is somewhat misleading. Historical accounts indicate that a dervish tekke existed on the site until its destruction in 1826, during Sultan Mahmud II's campaign against the Bektashi dervish order, which was closely associated with the disbanded Janissary corps. According to one theory, Kütüklü Baba was a wandering dervish who served under the Ottoman general Gazi Evrenos, founding the structure during his campaigns. The surviving structure is a stone-built, octagonal mausoleum (turbe) with a vaulted roof. Inside, visitors will find the tomb of the ascetic, covered in green cloth, as well as a vestibule adorned with carved symbols, such as an axe and the Bektashi kyulahi (dervish cap). It is believed that the monument may have been constructed on the ruins of an earlier Christian temple. Today, it serves as a religious site for both Muslims and Christians, with Muslims regarding it as the tomb of Kütüklü Baba, while Christians have converted the eastern section into a makeshift church dedicated to St. George.
