If you find yourself in the Prefecture of Xanthi, you should not miss the chance to visit Lake Vistonida. Known for its canals connecting it to the sea, dense reed beds, and the small deltas of the rivers that flow into it, the lake is a true natural wonder. Adding to its charm are the lagoons of Lafri, Lafruda, Alyki, Elos, and the Porto Lagos Lagoon, where the chapels of Saint Nicholas and Panagia Pantanassa are built on small islets. Lake Vistonida is believed to have formed approximately five million years ago and is named after the Vistones, a Thracian tribe that once inhabited the region. It holds the title of the largest lake in Thrace, spanning an impressive 42,000 str., and serves as a crucial water reservoir for the Rhodope Mountains. Its waters are sustained by three channels near Porto Lagos, facilitating a blend of brackish and fresh water that fosters a rich and diverse ecosystem for various plant and animal species. Moreover, Lake Vistonida plays a vital role as a stopover for migratory birds travelling through Greece. It serves as a breeding ground for many species and provides a winter sanctuary for an astonishing 422 bird species. The sight of flamingos and other avian wonders makes this area a true paradise for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike.
