Relics of Saint Gregory of N. Karvali
The Holy Church of Saint Gregory the Theologian in Nea Karvali is located 10 kilometres from the city of Kavala. The church, built in honour of the great Saint and Hierarch, follows the same architectural style as that of Gelveri in Asia Minor. It is dedicated to the distinguished scholar Gregory the Theologian, also known as Gregory of Nazianzus, and since 1924, it has housed his revered relic, preserved in a golden reliquary. Every year, on the eve of his feast day, January 24, a Great Vespers service is held, followed by an all-night vigil. On the morning of his feast day, January 25, a Divine Liturgy is celebrated, and the revered relic is carried in a procession through the village streets. Afterward, the relic remains in the narthex of the church for veneration until every last pilgrim has had the opportunity to pay their respects.
