The Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael, the largest and most renowned monastery on Thassos, is perched on the edge of a cliff with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Located near the village of Theologos, 35 km west of Limenas, this women's monastery is an important pilgrimage site dedicated to the island's patron saint. According to tradition, the ascetic Luke, following the instructions of Archangel Michael in 110 AD, built a small chapel here, from which holy water flowed. Later, by a miracle, the Holy Nail (the nail that pierced the right hand of Christ during the Crucifixion), which had been dedicated to the Holy Monastery of Philotheos on Mount Athos by Emperor Nikephoros Botaneiates, found its way to this church. The monastery was later founded on the same site and continues to belong to the Monastery of Philotheos. The Grace of Archangel Michael and the presence of the Holy Nail attract a significant number of pilgrims to this sacred site.
