Soufli Silk Museum - Piraeus Bank Cultural Foundation
The Silk Museum in Soufli is a vibrant thematic museum dedicated to the production and processing of silk, a craft that has long been central to the town's heritage. Through a unique blend of original exhibits and contemporary technology, visitors embark on a remarkable journey that mirrors the intricacies of silk itself. Special guided tours are available for organised groups and schools, showcasing the museum's thoughtfully designed spaces. Visitors can observe various stages of silk production, including reeling, yarn processing, and weaving. These exhibits are enhanced by informative videos illustrating the entire process, from silkworm rearing to the creation of the final product.
Housed in a neoclassical building dating back to 1886, the museum is situated in the heart of Soufli. The building underwent meticulous restoration and reopened in September 2008, using natural materials like iron, wood, and curassan to preserve its authenticity. Unique architectural features, including the heavy iron doors, shutters, and the frescoes in the baptistery room, have been preserved and are displayed as originally crafted. A photographic record of the restoration process can be found in the reception area. Historically, this building served as a general store and waxworks, which explains the presence of an internal well, likely added for fire safety purposes.
