The famous Sword of Komotini, a towering monument, is a central symbol of the city. It consists of a massive marble column, 14 metres high, topped by a large vertical metal sword representation. Known as the Heroon, this monument serves as a focal point for national and other ceremonial anniversaries. Wreaths are laid at the Heroon, and every Sunday the Greek flag is ceremonially raised and lowered, accompanied by a military procession and a philharmonic band playing the national anthem. These moments often inspire awe in the uninitiated traveller, who observes with admiration the profound respect shown by all passers-by—whether on foot or in vehicles—as they stand still in complete silence until the flag finishes its full ascent on the tall mast. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in Komotini and is considered the central point of the town.
